Meditation is a
practice that's existed around for thousands of years yet, there is still a big
misconception about what it really is. The majority of people like to link meditation
with a monk sitting on top of a mountain, crossing legs, staring into the
horizon.
Meditation is actually
something that everybody can do and can benefit from. There's even been various
scientific studies that prove this. Here's some of the benefits. To understand
what meditation really is we should begin by looking at our own lives. We spend
the majority of every single day ay we're thinking, we're always thinking.
Humans are addicted to thinking. Try to stop thinking right now for just 10
seconds. Unless you've been practicing meditation for a while, you had at least
a thought or two popping into your mind during this short period of time. You
might say well, thinking isn't a bad thing, we need to think in order to
survive. Well, that's true to some extent. However, if you really sit down and
take a look at what you think of, the large majority of it isn't as useful as
you think. A lot of it is actually quite negative. To prove this, you can take
a pen and paper for five minutes and record as many of your thoughts as you
can. Now, count the positive thoughts and the negative ones. See! We know that
we think a lot, and we also know that most of our thoughts are either negative
or not constructive. Finally, we know that our thoughts can affect how we feel
so you can see how we came to the conclusion that thinking too much might just
make you feel down sometimes. Now what does thinking have to do with
meditation? well there's hundreds of different ways that you can meditate.
There's guided meditation, breathing meditation, and mantra meditation to name
a few. However, all of these ways of meditating share one thing in common:
their goal is teaching us how to slow down the amount of thoughts entering our
mind as well as the speed over which thoughts enter our mind and with practice
you can even reach points where you have no thoughts for short periods of time.
Therefore, meditation has so many benefits. When you think less you become more
in control of your feelings. So, when you practice meditation, you're basically
teaching your mind how to turn off your thoughts like a switch. So, the next
time you get carried away in negative thoughts, you can just turn them off. By
practicing meditation, you can control whether or not you want to get mad. Additionally,
when you think less, you start spending less time in your head and more time
outside, and you start becoming mindful of things like the beautiful bright
green trees, you'll notice flowers on the floor, you’ll enjoy the beauty of the
moment. Through meditation you’ll practice mindfulness. You'll become less
involved with your thoughts and more involved with the real world and that is
the beauty of meditation.
With everything that has been said above,
you have absolutely no excuse to not start meditating and practicing
mindfulness you and your beloved ones.
